Clauses and Adverbs -Types of Clauses in English

Adverb and Clauses

An Adverb is a word which modifies A Verb, An Adjective, An Adverb and A Clause.

Modifying a Verb:

Examples:

She plays tennis well.

She sings beautifully. ('well'  & 'beautifully'  are adverbs, modifying the verbs, 'plays' & 'sings' 

Modifying an Adjective:

Examples:

She is a very good player.  

'good' is an adjective modifying the noun, 'player' and 'very' is an adverb, modifying the  adjective, 'good'

They are very intelligent students

Modifying an Adverb:

Examples:

She plays tennis very well.

She sings very beautifully.

('well' & 'beautifully' are adverbs, and the adverb, 'very' is qualifying them. 

Modifying a Clause:

There are three types of Clauses: a Noun Clause, An Adjective Clause, and an adverbial clause.

A Noun Clause:

This clause is the object of the verb expect and so does the work of a noun.

Examples:

He earns whatever he can.

I went to see what had happened.

An Adjective Clause:

This clause is a group of words which contains a Subject and a Predicate of its own. 

He tells a tale that sounds true.

An Adverb Clause:

This clause is a group of words which contains a Subject and a Predicate of its own and does the work of an adverb. 

Examples:

He does it because he chooses to.

They advanced as far as they dared.

We went where we liked to.

Adverb modifying a Clause:

She was dressed in black. (is a clause)

She was dressed all in black. ('all' is an adverb, qualifying the clause, 'she was dressed in black.)

Even if, she invites me, I shall not go to the party.

I was sick, therefore, I didn't take the exam last year.
